Shark Teeth

I heard shark teeth hunting is really good in Myrtle Beach? Is this true? If so, does anyone have hints for a novice? Like the best time of day? Best time of year? Best place to look?

Shark Teeth

You can find shark%26#39;s teeth anywhere on the Grand Strand, but I have found that the further south you go, the better the chances, finding them. If possible, walk with the sun to your back, close to the water%26#39;s edge and they will shine in the light. Some can be found in the sand as well, after tides go out. I have find them, too, using a child%26#39;s strainer, in the water. Just walking on the beach and having alot of patience, will net you at least one or two, every trip.

good luck !!!

Shark Teeth

Hello,

With some patience, you can definitely find shark%26#39;s teeth at Myrtle Beach - we normally find 20-30 per year - we are there for a week. Stay at the edge of the water and watch for them rolling back toward the ocean when a wave is receding. You have to be fast!! You can also find them when you are walking in shallow water and as described in the other reply to your post. If you need any more info, let me know. Good luck!

As the tide is receeding look for areas of dark colored sand with lots of fine shell fragments. Most of the sharks teeth are small but every now and then you get a really nice one. Some of the largest I have found were in the mornings just laying there on top of the sand all by themselves. In case you didn%26#39;t know they will be black and not white as they absorb all sorts of minerals from the water. 2nd Ave. pier area is very good.

Around 52nd ave and south is great for finding teeth, too.

About 6 or 7 years ago, the city of Myrtle did a dregging of the beach, and to this day, you can find lots around the Dunes Village, where the heavy equipment was that brought so much of the sand in from the water. Any time of the day is good, although early mornings are of course great because not so many are searching.

Hello, I have found shark teeth every year I have ever gone to Myrtle Beach. Most of them aren%26#39;t much bigger than a dogs tooth but they are there! You can look anywhere but I just walk along near the waters edge. Watch for something very dark black and shiny, there are some pieces of broken sea shells that can fool you sometimes but they are not as dark black or as shiny. When you find one keep looking in that area because I usually find more nearby. The black teeth are prehistoric and are millions of years old! ( Yeah I know that sounds crazy but its true) While you are in Myrtle Beach be sure to go to the Gay Dolphin Gift shop (on the ocean front about 2 blocks north of the pavilion, bottom floor) they have all kinds of sharks teeth that you can look at, (some are as big as your hand!)learn about, and of course buy. So if you don%26#39;t find one you like you could buy one, their cheap. Don%26#39;t spend too much time in one place, just walk along looking down and soon or later you will find one. Good luck!

Seasheller,

Sharks teeth can be found both black and white. The black ones are fossils, and the white are modern. I%26#39;ve found hundreds of both on SC and NC beaches since I was a little kid. The largest one that I%26#39;ve ever found was a black fossil, 2 1/2 inches long. I found it on the point of Garden City beach about 25 years ago. I keep searching hoping to out do that, but as with most people searching along the SC and NC shore, most teeth I find these days are only around a 1/2 (+ or -) of an inch. I%26#39;ll keep searching!

Best Wishes!

You can find various t;ypes of sharks teeth along the Grand Strand. All you need is patience. I have been searching for sharks teeth at Myrtle Beach for about 15 years and have had many sucessful days. When the dredging was being done we found over 1300 that week. Yes 1300! Most were somewhat small but several nice ones are in the collection. Usually we find 50 or more in a weeks time. I hunt in shell beds and do not limit to any particular tide. I have found sunglasses hinder me in spotting the ';shine'; of a tooth. Happy hunting.

Ever since they did dredging here a few years back, I haven%26#39;t seem to have found as many sharks teeth as before. However, the further south you go, the more successful you will be. Garden City, and Pawley%26#39;s are good places.
